For Day 13 of our Advent-ure, we return to the Matthew account of the angel's appearance to Joseph. He had been told to go ahead and take Mary as His wife, and he was told to name the child whom she was expecting, Jesus...Here are the last 2 verses of Matthew 1:
24Then Joseph, being aroused from sleep, did as the angel of the Lord commanded him and took to him his wife,25and did not know her till she had brought forth her firstborn Son. And he called His name Jesus.
The significance of that name is found in Matthew 1:21, as Joseph was instructed to, "call His name Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins."
The name of Jesus - a reminder of the salvation that He would come to bring. We're told in Philippians 2 that:
9Therefore God also has highly exalted Him and given Him the name which is above every name,10that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, and of those on earth, and of those under the earth,11and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
The name of Jesus, our Savior, our Messiah, the King of Kings and the Lord of Lords, is the name above every name. We do not speak the name of Jesus lightly and certainly not as a mere expression. There is power in that name, and it is the only name through which men and woman can be saved! We lift up the name of Jesus!
